Last weekend commemorated the 56-year anniversary of the Voting Rights Act being signed into law. Even though our communities are full of folks who remember a time before the voting rights act was passed, we’re still fighting the same fight 56 long years later.

As the youngest daughter of President Johnson said at a rally this weekend hosted by the Poor People's Campaign, “we have gone backward in a way that just breaks my heart.”

But we cant’ be resigned to failure just yet.

As the senior whip for the 116th Congress, I know that Democrats have the ability to pass legislation that will protect our democracy -- now we just have to have the courage to do so, like my colleague Rep. Terri Sewell who plans to reintroduce a bill to “restore” the Voting Rights Act.
