Last weekend commemorated the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act being signed into law. Even though our communities are full of folks who remember a time before the voting rights act was passed, we’re still fighting the same fight 56 long years later.
As the youngest daughter of President Johnson said at a rally this weekend hosted by the Poor People's Campaign, “we have gone backward in a way that just breaks my heart.”
But we can't be resigned to failure just yet.
As the senior whip for the 116th Congress, I know that Democrats can pass legislation that will protect our democracy -- now we just have to have the courage to do so, like my colleague Rep. Terri Sewell who plans to reintroduce a bill to “restore” the Voting Rights Act.

Republicans have passed over 404 bills to restrict the vote, many particularly targeted at Black and brown communities, across the country.
Four hundred and four, friends.
We can’t wait to pass legislation to protect our vote. Our democracy is on the line, and I won’t sit idly by and watch as my constituents’ voices are stripped from them.
Thanks for all your support and for helping me protect the vote.
Yours,
Yvette D. Clarke
