** What's On This Week
------------------------------------------------------------
Comrade, THE WEEK BEFORE THE WEEKEND...

DC JOBs with JUSTICE reports: Today (Tuesday, Oct. 1) we have a special solidarity ask from our allies at 32BJ SEIU – Rally at McPherson Square Park, 4 PM, in support of stonewalled janitors. For the past 2 weeks 32BJ janitors have been hard at work trying to negotiate a fair contract with the Washington Service Contractors Association. 32BJ has organized a rally to amp up the pressure and ensure that janitors are treated with basic dignity and fairness. We must show the bosses that DC stands with janitors! Can you join us at TODAY’s rally? RSVP ([link removed])

More labor solidarity outreach Sunday: This coming Sunday (Oct. 6) from 12 - 2 PM the Just Pay Coalition is doing worker outreach at the Minnesota Avenue Metro to talk to folks about how to protect themselves from wage theft and ensure they receive the new minimum wage as well as overtime pay, paid sick days, and (starting next year) paid family leave.
Sign up here ([link removed]) : or email [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) if you have any questions. -- Nikko B

Metro D.C. DSA's rent control working group – a general business meeting on Saturday, October 5 from 1:00 - 2:30 PM at the Petworth Library.
At this meeting, we'll continue to talk strategy and also get updates from chapter members working on our rent control campaign. We'll also game plan for our upcoming town hall and the big coalition rally on 10/26. This is going to be one of our big campaigns over the next year, and working group meetings are a great way to get plugged into all kinds of chapter work. All are welcome; this is coalition work.
------------------------------------------------------------
From the Labor Working Group -- Our next meeting/get together is going to be next Saturday, October 5th, at 5 PM at Lyman's Tavern in Columbia Heights. A lot of us are working on different "labor"-y projects for DSA. Figured it'd be a good time for all of us to get together over a drink and share what we've been working on. – Luke R

Monday, October 28 6:30-8:30 PM
Financial Capitalism: Socialist Night School ([link removed])
The Festival Center 1640 Columbia Rd NW · Washington, DC ([link removed])
In the decade leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, booming banks, rising house prices and cheap consumer goods propped up living standards in the rich world. Thirty years of rocketing debt and financial wizardry had masked the deep underlying fragility of finance-led growth, and in 2008 we were forced to pay up.
The decade since has witnessed all kinds of morbid symptoms, as all around the rich world, wages and productivity are stagnant, inequality is rising, and ecological systems are collapsing.
In this session, Grace Blakely, author of Stolen: How to Save the World from Financialisation, will help us better understand the role of financialization in our current moment and what we can do to change course.
This session of Socialist Night School is jointly sponsored by Metro DC DSA and the Democracy Collaborative.

Tuesday, November 5 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Introduction to Marxism (Socialist Night School) ([link removed])
Northeast Neighborhood Library 330 7th St NE · Washington, DC ([link removed])
“Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks.” This is how Marx, in one of his more literary moments, described the relation between capital and labor. Marx was predominantly a theorist of how capitalism worked, not what a future socialist society may look like. In this introduction to Marxism, which will strive to be light on jargon, we will focus on how Marxists view capitalism, how capitalist profit is rooted in the exploitation of labor, and how the class struggle is the result of this.
The session will be led by Chip Gibbons, who is co-chair of the Metro DC DSA Political Education Working Group. He is also a journalist whose work has been published in Jacobin and the Nation. Follow link for details

The Korean Peace Process and The Legacy of US Imperialism in Asia ([link removed])
Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library 3160 16th St NW · Washington, DC ([link removed])
The chaotic current state of a seventy-year standoff is untangled by Tim Shorrock, a Nation correspondent and expert in the region who has been covering the intersection of national security and capitalism since the late 1970s. The bipartisan US goal of maintaining an imperialist foothold in the region conditions the narrative and complicates the efforts of a national coalition of US and Korean activists in solidarity with Korean people’s movements. Presented by the MDC DSA Socialist Night School. Follow link for full details.

>>Jacobin Magazine on the Socialist Character of "The Great British Bake-Off" on PBS. Reality TV programs are not generally known for fostering cooperation, much less a socialist sense of solidarity. But in "The Great Socialist Bake Off," Josh Freedman of Jacobin magazine argues that this is exactly the quietly subversive message delivered by "The Great British Bake Off," a British-made reality TV show appearing regularly on PBS. The show features groups of amateur bakers in the UK who do compete to determine who is the best baker of a given week, Freedman's article acknowledges, yet there is no prize money involved, the rival bakers generally show support for each other's efforts instead of vicious rivalry, and what is exemplified is an individual quest for self-expression and self-fulfillment that might be expected to flourish under socialism, free from capitalist market pressure.
