DC JOBs with JUSTICE reports: Today (Tuesday, Oct. 1) we have a special solidarity ask from our allies at 32BJ SEIU – Rally at McPherson Square Park, 4 PM, in support of stonewalled janitors. For the past 2 weeks 32BJ janitors have been hard at work trying to negotiate a fair contract with the Washington Service Contractors Association. 32BJ has organized a rally to amp up the pressure and ensure that janitors are treated with basic dignity and fairness. More labor solidarity outreach Sunday: This coming Sunday (Oct. 6) from 12 - 2 PM the Just Pay Coalition is doing worker outreach at the Minnesota Avenue Metro to talk to folks about how to protect themselves from wage theft and ensure they receive the new minimum wage as well as overtime pay, paid sick days, and (starting next year) paid family leave.

Metro D.C. DSA's rent control working group – a general business meeting on Saturday, October 5 from 1:00 - 2:30 PM at the Petworth Library.
At this meeting, we'll continue to talk strategy and also get updates from chapter members working on our rent control campaign. We'll also game plan for our upcoming town hall and the big coalition rally on 10/26. This is going to be one of our big campaigns over the next year, and working group meetings are a great way to get plugged into all kinds of chapter work. All are welcome; this is coalition work.  From the Labor Working Group -- Our next meeting/get together is going to be next Saturday, October 5th, at 5 PM at Lyman's Tavern in Columbia Heights.  “Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks.” This is how Marx, in one of his more literary moments, described the relation between capital and labor. Marx was predominantly a theorist of how capitalism worked, not what a future socialist society may look like. In this introduction to Marxism, which will strive to be light on jargon, we will focus on how Marxists view capitalism, how capitalist profit is rooted in the exploitation of labor, and how the class struggle is the result of this.
The session will be led by Chip Gibbons, who is co-chair of the Metro DC DSA Political Education Working Group. He is also a journalist whose work has been published in Jacobin and the Nation. Follow link for details
