forestall a crisis in America's public health workforce.

Underinvestment In Public Health

The March 2023 issue of Health Affairs includes a cluster of research
papers focused on lessons for public health policy and practice arising
from the COVID-19 pandemic experience in the United States.

In one article, Jason Orr and coauthors discuss the effects of chronic
public health underinvestment

and how public health services can be made more financially sustainable
and accountable.

According to Orr and coauthors, there is a need for standardization and
accountability in public health finance, but research is needed to
demonstrate the value of and most effective delivery for a baseline of
public health services.

Although more funding is necessary, the authors note that "with
greater funding follow, naturally and appropriately, calls for greater
accountability."

The authors discuss several policy recommendations to strengthen funding
for the US public health system.
