Dear John,

Thanks to support from the de Beaumont Foundation, the Insider Lunch and Learn on April 4 will be open for everyone to attend.

Join Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil for a discussion about current workforce exodus trends in state and local public health departments and what must be done to forestall a crisis in America’s public health workforce.
Underinvestment In Public Health
The March 2023 issue of Health Affairs includes a cluster of research papers focused on lessons for public health policy and practice arising from the COVID-19 pandemic experience in the United States.

In one article, Jason Orr and coauthors discuss the effects of chronic public health underinvestment and how public health services can be made more financially sustainable and accountable.

According to Orr and coauthors, there is a need for standardization and accountability in public health finance, but research is needed to demonstrate the value of and most effective delivery for a baseline of public health services.

Although more funding is necessary, the authors note that “with greater funding follow, naturally and appropriately, calls for greater accountability.”

The authors discuss several policy recommendations to strengthen funding for the US public health system.
