This is a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation's health. School nurses are a critical component of our nation’s public health infrastructure. This year's theme is “Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health.” The goal is to ensure that everyone in all cultural communities has a chance at a long and healthy life. Read more in the Justification Toolkit for reasons to attend and use the template letter included to share with administrators or employers.   Managing Chronic Health Conditions Decreasing School Absenteeism in Children with Migraine Headache Nearly 60% of children and adolescents worldwide report headaches, with 8% to 12% of youth with headaches meeting the diagnostic criteria for migraine. The NASN Learning Center program, The Emerging School Nurse Leader Role in Decreasing School Absenteeism in Children with Migraine Headache, highlights the Headache Action Plan Project for Youth (HAPPY) and describes the school nurse’s role in identifying students with migraine, connecting them with their primary care provider, and assuring the use of headache action plans for students to manage their headaches effectively while at school. This educational offering also shows how timely identification and effective management of childhood migraine could prevent chronification and long-term disability. School nurses play a pivotal role in decreasing absenteeism and addressing chronic absenteeism. The report highlights how Seattle Public Schools' implementation of a COVID-19 vaccination program increased COVID-19 vaccination coverage among students aged 5–18 from 56.5% to 80.3%. Register today. Medicaid Unwinding About half of the children in the United States are now insured through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The expiration of the continuous coverage requirement authorized by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act presents the single largest health coverage transition event since the first open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act. When the continuous coverage requirement expires, states will have up to 12 months to return to normal eligibility and enrollment operations. The Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines, developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell and colleagues at the University of Virginia in 2001, is an evidence-based model for schools to use in conducting threat assessments of students. It's National Poison Prevention Week National Poison Prevention Week aims to raise awareness about poison control centers and the poison help hotline (1-800-222-1222), providing expert advice available 24/7/365 at no cost. Poison exposures and accidents do occur and can also be prevented with education and awareness.
