Managing Chronic Health Conditions | | |
Decreasing School Absenteeism in Children with Migraine Headache
Nearly 60% of children and adolescents worldwide report headaches, with 8% to 12% of youth with headaches meeting the diagnostic criteria for migraine. The NASN Learning Center program, The Emerging School Nurse Leader Role in Decreasing School Absenteeism in Children with Migraine Headache, highlights the Headache Action Plan Project for Youth (HAPPY) and describes the school nurse’s role in identifying students with migraine, connecting them with their primary care provider, and assuring the use of headache action plans for students to manage their headaches effectively while at school. This educational offering also shows how timely identification and effective management of childhood migraine could prevent chronification and long-term disability.
School nurses play a pivotal role in decreasing absenteeism and addressing chronic absenteeism. See also the NASN Course: A School Nurse-Led Initiative to Address Chronic Absenteeism and The School Nurse-Led Active Surveillance Manual to assist school nurses in addressing health-related absences and chronic absenteeism.
