, director of the CRMC and the Southern Poverty Law Center's
Alabama state office, sits with the bestselling author of "An
American Story" for a frank discussion on race.
"An American Story," published this year, tells the story
of American slavery through the voice of a teacher trying to help her
students understand the country's history. Alexander's
"Door of No Return" series explores the slave trade
through an 11-year-old boy from West Africa.
Alexander is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lee
Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, the Coretta Scott King Author Honor and
the 2017 Inaugural Pat Conroy Legacy Award. He was awarded the Newbery
Medal for children's literature for his 2014 book "The
Crossover," about basketball prodigy twins.
