Tomorrow, March 16, a new rule upheld by The Florida Board of Medicine will go into effect, banning best-practice medical care for all transgender and nonbinary young people across the state. This rule goes against the guidance of every major medical and mental health association in the U.S. And personal medical decisions should be made between patients, parents, and doctors – not by government bureaucrats.

Research shows that transgender medical care is consistently associated with better mental health outcomes — including lower suicide risk. Trans young people deserve access to the medical care they need to lead happy and healthy lives.

A 2021 peer-reviewed study by The Trevor Project, the first large-scale study of more than 9,000 youth who received gender-affirming hormone therapy found that it was significantly related to lower rates of depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts among trans and nonbinary youth. Specifically for young people under age 18, receiving this hormone therapy was associated with nearly 40% lower odds of recent depression and of a past-year suicide attempt.
