Research shows that transgender medical care is consistently associated with better mental health outcomes — including lower suicide risk. Trans young people deserve access to the medical care they need to lead happy and healthy lives.
A 2021 peer-reviewed study by The Trevor Project, the first large-scale study of more than 9,000 youth who received gender-affirming hormone therapy found that it was significantly related to lower rates of depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts among trans and nonbinary youth. Specifically for young people under age 18, receiving this hormone therapy was associated with nearly 40% lower odds of recent depression and of a past-year suicide attempt.
Every day, our research and advocacy teams work together to ensure that what we know about LGBTQ youth informs what we do to protect and serve young people.
One of the best ways to stay updated and help Trevor affect change is to join our Advocacy list. Text TREVOR to 40609. We’ll let you know when our team is fighting or supporting a bill in your state, so you can reach out to your legislator and make sure your voice is heard!
Thank you for showing up for LGBTQ young people and reminding them that they’re never alone.
