In case you missed it, Health Affairs Director of Equity Vabren Watts
provided an update in Forefront about the progress that's been made to
realize Health Affairs' goals in advancing equity in scholarly
publishing.

He was also published in Wiley Learned Publishing alongside additional
members of the Health Affairs team to detail how this progress has been
made over time.

Public Health Lab Systems

In the March 2023 issue, Jay Varma and coauthors examine the the US
public health laboratory system
<[link removed]>
and the gaps that were revealed during COVID-19.

The authors write that the world is entering a new age of pandemics,
with novel microbial threats emerging and spreading faster than ever
before, and as such, laboratory testing is critical to rapid detection,
monitoring, and guidance during disease outbreaks.

Varma and coauthors find weakness in COVID-19 test execution and design
as well as gaps in test reporting and monitoring.

Varma and coauthors' findings lead them to recommend improvements to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) internal
laboratory operations and external laboratory engagement.

"The CDC can work with external partners to lower the up-front barriers
to testing access, especially early in an outbreak," they conclude.
