Dear John,

In case you missed it, Health Affairs Director of Equity Vabren Watts provided an update in Forefront about the progress that's been made to realize Health Affairs' goals in advancing equity in scholarly publishing.

He was also published in Wiley Learned Publishing alongside additional members of the Health Affairs team to detail how this progress has been made over time.
Public Health Lab Systems
In the March 2023 issue, Jay Varma and coauthors examine the the US public health laboratory system and the gaps that were revealed during COVID-19.

The authors write that the world is entering a new age of pandemics, with novel microbial threats emerging and spreading faster than ever before, and as such, laboratory testing is critical to rapid detection, monitoring, and guidance during disease outbreaks.

Varma and coauthors find weakness in COVID-19 test execution and design as well as gaps in test reporting and monitoring.

Varma and coauthors’ findings lead them to recommend improvements to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) internal laboratory operations and external laboratory engagement.

"The CDC can work with external partners to lower the up-front barriers to testing access, especially early in an outbreak," they conclude.
