CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Tell the U.S. Department of
Transportation to Protect Our Communities from Explosive Trains

Not even a month ago, a train carrying
hazardous materials derailed in East Palestine, Ohio — and the
fallout has been devastating for the community. This was an
unfortunate accident waiting to happen and is the culmination of
years of deregulation and dangerous cost-cutting measures by
railroad companies to increase profits at the expense of the
safety of workers and the communities through which the trains
travel.

Train derailments are unfortunately an all too common occurrence,
made all the more dangerous by the transportation of dangerous
chemicals like extremely unstable liquefied natural gas (LNG)
which can lead to explosions and fires so hot they can burn
people up to one mile away.

Gas company New Fortress Energy has a
reckless plan to transport volatile LNG by rail 200 miles from
northeast Pennsylvania to Gibbstown, New Jersey — despite 2
million people living in the potential blast zone. With this
horrific disaster in Ohio, it's never been clearer that we must
take action to protect people endangered by hazardous materials
on trains.

Send your letter insisting the Department of Transportation take
immediate action by banning LNG by rail nationwide — and prevent
another devastating accident from happening > ( [link removed] )

BIG WINS

* Alaska's Tongass National Forest Gets
the Protections It Deserves: After a decades-long fight, the
Biden administration has reinstated a ban on logging and most
forms of roadbuilding across more than nine million acres of the
Tongass, reversing a Trump-era decision to exempt the region from
national Roadless Rule protections.

* Biden Paves Way for More Seamless National Charging Network:
The Biden administration finalized standards that will make it
easier for drivers to find, operate, and pay for electric vehicle
(EV) charging infrastructure by aiming to unify the EV charging
experience across the nation and support President Biden's goal
of a convenient, reliable, and driver-friendly network of 500,000
EV chargers by 2030.

* In War on Plastic Waste, New York City Council Strikes a Blow:
More than 20,000 tons of plastic foodware are discarded annually
in New York City, and most of this waste ends up in
environmentally problematic incinerators or landfills, or as
litter on city streets and beaches or in parks and waterways. New
York's newly passed "Skip the Stuff" legislation is one of many
important steps needed to begin reversing this trend.

ACTION ROUNDUP

* Help Stop Massive New Oil Drilling
Project in the Arctic: ( [link removed] ) The "Willow Project" will be a disaster for our climate and for
critical Arctic wildlife. It would also be a setback in our
transition to a clean energy future, and flies in the face of
President Biden's commitment to tackle our climate crisis.

* Urge the EPA to Protect Communities from Deadly Soot: ( [link removed] ) Over 63 million Americans experience unhealthy spikes in daily
levels of soot pollution. Soot exposure is linked to increased
infant mortality, cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes,
cognitive impairments, and premature death. Tell President
Biden's EPA to strengthen its Clean Air Act proposal for strict
soot limits to further protect public health.

* Tell NOAA and BOEM to Strengthen Protections for North Atlantic
Right Whales: ( [link removed] ) North Atlantic right whales are one of the most endangered
whales on the planet, facing serious threats from fishing gear
entanglement and vessel strikes — all while struggling to adapt
to climate change. If the species is to avoid extinction we must
take immediate action.
