Friend, This week, we began our work on the bipartisan Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and held our first hearing. We heard from four witnesses with diverse experiences and expertise on the activities of the CCP. The threat posed by the CCP is widespread - we are in a technological, economic, idealogical, and military competition with the CCP, and inaction is not an option. The hearing was an important first step in our committee’s work to develop a policy blueprint to compete with the CCP, rather than appease them. I discussed two of my top priorities with witnesses at the hearing this week. I spoke with former Deputy National Security Advisor Matt Pottinger about the CCP’s malign activities – from human rights abuses, trade exploitation, and IP theft, to fentanyl smuggling and international espionage – and asked him about U.S. tax dollars going to fund these activities. Not a single cent of U.S. taxpayer money should be going to the CCP. Watch my remarks and questions HERE. Secondly, I spoke with Ms. Tong, a CCP labor camp survivor and human rights activist who is shining a light on the CCP’s oppression and human rights atrocities. I asked her about the CCP’s propaganda machine and how we can combat it. You can watch our full conversation HERE. We have our work cut out for us on this Committee. While we have a challenging task ahead, I am confident that we will work together in a bipartisan manner to compete to win against the CCP. Best, Getting Politics Out of Your Retirement Savings President Biden has pursued a woke, ESG – environmental, social, and governance – agenda. The Biden Administration wants retirement plan managers to consider climate and social factors when making investment decisions that impact Americans’ retirement accounts rather than on focusing on maximizing returns for workers and retirees. So, if you have a 401k plan through your employer, the plan manager would have a green light to make decisions based on furthering a political agenda rather than on increasing your retirement savings. Some workers may even be put into ESG plans by default. This week, I voted to push back on Biden's ESG agenda because investment decisions should be solely based on maximizing returns for workers and retirees, not on advancing a political agenda. Watch my video diving into this important issue HERE. Meeting with Iowans Whether in the district or in Washington, hearing from Iowans is the most important part of my job! This week, I had the opportunity to meet with Iowans, hear their priorities, and discuss important legislative solutions to challenges facing our district. Iowa Credit Union League It was great to meet with the Iowa Credit Union League. We discussed their work to improve the financial security of Iowans and priorities for this year. American Legion of Iowa I enjoyed catching up with members from the American Legion of Iowa in DC this week and discussing ways we can continue working together to serve our veterans. Kut Kings William Burt from Waterloo came to the office this week! I heard more about his barbershop, Kut Kings. Their mission is to ensure underserved populations, including veterans & the homeless, can get a haircut at low to no cost. Iowa Department of Transportation I met with Iowa Department of Transportation between votes this week. We discussed important infrastructure projects and transportation priorities back home and we got to see one of Iowa's statues in the Capitol. Disabled American Veterans I met with advocates from Iowa Disabled American Veterans in DC to discuss ways we can improve care at the VA, expand mental health resources, and ensure those who served receive the care they have earned. Little Island Child Care Center I visited the Little Island Child Care Center in Fairbank to hear about their work to provide child care services to those in the community. We discussed ways we can support child care workers, and lower costs for both providers and working families. Congressional App Challenge Ceremony I held a ceremony for 2022 Congressional App Challenge participants and our winner, Adrian Gomez! Adrian’s app helps students track and budget the reward money they earn through the Job Foundation, a Cedar Valley nonprofit that allows students to earn money based on their grades. Amazing initiative and work by all! After the ceremony, it was great to talk with students at the Waterloo Career Center on future careers in tech and cyber security — I fully believe the next life changing technology will be developed by a Waterloo student! Waverly Child Care and Preschool Waverly Child Care and Preschool (WCCP) provides families with excellent child care and a variety of education programs. I visited WCCP to meet with their team and discuss ways we can improve child care and early education options.
