Friend,
This week, we began our work on the bipartisan Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and held our first hearing. We heard from four witnesses with diverse experiences and expertise on the activities of the CCP.
The threat posed by the CCP is widespread - we are in a technological, economic, idealogical, and military competition with the CCP, and inaction is not an option. The hearing was an important first step in our committee’s work to develop a policy blueprint to compete with the CCP, rather than appease them.
I discussed two of my top priorities with witnesses at the hearing this week. I spoke with former Deputy National Security Advisor Matt Pottinger about the CCP’s malign activities – from human rights abuses, trade exploitation, and IP theft, to fentanyl smuggling and international espionage – and asked him about U.S. tax dollars going to fund these activities. Not a single cent of U.S. taxpayer money should be going to the CCP. Watch my remarks and questions HERE.
Secondly, I spoke with Ms. Tong, a CCP labor camp survivor and human rights activist who is shining a light on the CCP’s oppression and human rights atrocities. I asked her about the CCP’s propaganda machine and how we can combat it. You can watch our full conversation HERE.
We have our work cut out for us on this Committee. While we have a challenging task ahead, I am confident that we will work together in a bipartisan manner to compete to win against the CCP.
