From Minsk to Lasting Peace in Ukraine

The political upheavals of 2014 in Ukraine and the simmering conflict that continued for eight years on Ukraine’s territory remain of fundamental importance for an understanding of the war in Ukraine and viable paths to peace.
To discuss these issues, the Quincy Institute is holding a conversation with two leading experts on Ukraine, professors Dominique Arel and Jesse Driscoll. Their book, Ukraine’s Unnamed War ([link removed]) , is a crucial guide to the origins of the Russian invasion and the ethnic, cultural, political and geopolitical dynamics that underlie the present conflict. It should be essential reading for U.S. policymakers, analysts, and all Americans who are concerned by this tragic and dreadful war. Suzanne Loftus, Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute, will moderate.

Dominique Arel
Dr. Dominique Arel is Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Arel is an expert on comparative nationalism and a founding member of the Association for the Study of Nationalities. He co-edited Rebounding Identities: The Politics of Identity in Russia and Ukraine (John Hopkins University Press, 2006). Dr. Arel manages The Ukraine List (UKL), an electronic academic/current events newsletter that reaches over 1500 subscribers in thirty-five countries.
Jesse Driscoll
Dr. Jesse Driscoll is associate professor of political science and chair of the Global Leadership Institute at the University of California (San Diego). He is a specialist in Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Russian-speaking world, and author among other works of Warlords and Coalition Politics in Post-Soviet States (Cambridge University Press 2015).
Suzanne Loftus (Moderator)
Suzanne Loftus is a research fellow in the Eurasia Program at the Quincy Institute and author of Insecurity and the Rise of Nationalism in Putin’s Russia (Palgrave Macmillan 2019). Her latest book, Russia, China and the West in the Post-Cold War Era, will be published in April 2023.
