Nigerians go to the polls this weekend

Ahead of Nigeria’s presidential election this weekend, the World Justice Project caught up with the Samuel Ioron Foundation ([link removed]) . This 2022 World Justice Challenge finalist in the Equal Rights and Non-Discrimination category is working hard to encourage Nigerian women and young people to vote through their Vote+ program.

According to the 2022 WJP Rule of Law Index ([link removed]) , Nigeria’s rule of law score has decreased for the past five years. Notably at this moment, it ranks among the bottom third of countries when it comes to confidence that transition of power is subject to the law.

“As the election draws closer it’s becoming more tense,” the Foundation’s Dooshima Kave told the World Justice Project. “The message we’re trying to pass is simple—you know what you’re looking for in a leader and the things a leader should do.”

Turkey’s earthquakes show the deadly extent of construction scams ([link removed])

With more than 40,000 confirmed dead after a deadly earthquake struck Turkey and Syria earlier this month, experts are taking a hard look at the role that corruption may have played in construction scams in the country. Turkey ranks 70 out of 140 in the WJP Rule of Law Index ([link removed]) when it comes to absence of corruption.

WJP Executive Director Elizabeth Andersen writes in a letter to the editor that despite Russia’s illegal invasion, Ukraine has made strides in combatting corruption and is one of the top 10 improvers in the WJP Rule of Law Index since 2015.

Estonia gears up for elections amid Russian invasion fears ([link removed])

Five of the 10 most improved countries in the WJP Rule of Law Index since 2015 are near neighbors of Russia, which has seen its score decline. Among the biggest improvers is Estonia, which also broke into the world’s top 10 countries for its overall rule of law score in the 2022 Index.
