Dear John,

In just one year since Russian forces invaded Ukraine, more than 68,000 war crimes have been reported across the country, including hundreds of crimes against journalists and media outlets. Millions of Ukrainians may have been deported into Russia—including hundreds of thousands of children.

We know this because of the heroic work of Ukrainian civil society, which has documented these atrocities and war crimes, and provided support to those whose lives have been forever changed by the war.

Political Prisoner Spotlight

A member of Ukraine’s Crimean Tatar ethnic and religious minority, Server Mustafayev provided assistance to families of other Crimean Tatars whose loved ones were disappeared or arrested. For this, he’s now serving a 14-year sentence in a Russian maximum-security labor camp. Still, Mustafayev’s family and his community know he will persevere for what he believes is right.
