Many Medicare Recipients Overlook Key Support; Nurses Can Help
Many older adults with limited incomes do not realize that they are eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs, which covers Medicare premiums, deductibles, co-payments, and other out-of-pocket costs. A new report from the Public Policy Institute at AARP offers several ideas to address the enrollment challenge. One tactic for increasing enrollment rates: using trusted sources, such as nurses, to spread the word.

Promising Collaboration Shows How Health Equity Can Be Achieved
The Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program, announced in February 2022, is a model of how to build a primary care workforce ready to take on the challenge of health equity. The Campaign’s Strategic Advisory Committee chair, Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, is an author of a new commentary on the program, concluding that tuition to nurse practitioner students in exchange for their practicing in community-based centers represents an important first step to better health for all.

The Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program helps scholars develop skills in research, communications and more, with the goal of guiding them to become leaders in eliminating health disparities. The United Health Foundation Diversity in Health Care Scholarship offers support to current or former health professionals who plan to enroll in full- or part-time classes in the fall to advance their clinical credentials. Nurses Offered Loan Repayment in Exchange for Service
Licensed registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and nurse faculty members are invited to apply for the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program, which will pay up to 85% of debt for those who agree to serve in a critical shortage facility or an eligible nursing school as nurse faculty. Funding Offered to Local, Regional Vaccine Efforts
The National Council on Aging wants to encourage people who are older or have disabilities to get COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, and is offering grants to help make that happen. The NCOA will award approximately 250 grants for six-, 12-, or 15-month projects to local organizations including senior centers and community centers. Applications accepted till March 15 or funds are depleted.

AARP Community Challenge Funds “Quick-Action” Projects
AARP’s Community Challenge provides small grants to fund quick-action projects that can help communities become more livable. This year in addition to the flagship grants the opportunities include capacity-building microgrants and support for demonstration projects. Priority goes to projects that lead to physical improvements in the community; temporary demonstrations that lead to long-term change; and new programming pilots or services. Deadline: March 15.

A new grant opportunity is based on the premise that “all families in the U.S. should be able to provide their children with nutritious foods” that support optimal development.
