Many older adults with limited incomes do not realize that they are eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs, which covers Medicare premiums, deductibles, co-payments, and other out-of-pocket costs. A new report from the Public Policy Institute at AARP offers several ideas to address the enrollment challenge. One tactic for increasing enrollment rates: using trusted sources, such as nurses, to spread the word.
The Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program, announced in February 2022, is a model of how to build a primary care workforce ready to take on the challenge of health equity. The Campaign’s Strategic Advisory Committee chair, Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, is an author of a new commentary on the program, concluding that tuition to nurse practitioner students in exchange for their practicing in community-based centers represents an important first step to better health for all.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee whose main role is to provide subject matter expertise when it comes to personal protective equipment seeks two volunteer experts in two separate fields: occupational nursing and occupational medicine; and personal protective equipment equity/accessibility and community engagement. Deadline to nominate for the Standing Committee on Personal Protective Equipment for Workplace Safety and Health is February 24, 5 p.m. ET
The American Nurses Association has updated the Nursing Leadership: Scope and Standards of Practice and wants people’s thoughts on the draft. The Nursing Leadership (Nursing Administration) Scope & Standards of Practice Review and Revision Workgroup wants to hear from you as well as “members of your professional network, inter-professional colleagues, and other stakeholders.” Deadline: March 3.
The Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program helps scholars develop skills in research, communications and more, with the goal of guiding them to become leaders in eliminating health disparities. The program, part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, seeks applicants from the medical, nursing, and dentistry field who are from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Deadline: March 15.
The United Health Foundation Diversity in Health Care Scholarship offers support to current or former health professionals who plan to enroll in full- or part-time classes in the fall to advance their clinical credentials. The scholarship seeks applicants from populations underrepresented in health care. Read on if you are or plan to be a nurse, physician assistant, clinical psychologist, or clinical social worker. Deadline: March 24.
Cities, towns, tribes, reservations, and counties are invited to apply for the RWJF Culture of Health Prize, which celebrates communities where people and organizations are collaborating to take down barriers that have created unequal opportunities for health. Winning efforts will be those that address systemic problems and inspire others to take action. Deadline: March 29.
Wanted: 1 million people to join All of Us, a research project from the National Institutes of Health that involves filling out health surveys and, for those willing, sharing additional information. NIH hopes to speed up medical research by learning from so many what are the patterns in people’s health, habits, and where they live.
Licensed registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and nurse faculty members are invited to apply for the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program, which will pay up to 85% of debt for those who agree to serve in a critical shortage facility or an eligible nursing school as nurse faculty. Deadline for the Health Resources and Services Administration program: February 23.

Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the program provides funding, leadership training, and more, and is designed especially for those from populations underrepresented in doctoral disciplines who can bring unique and diverse perspectives to their research. The National Council on Aging wants to encourage people who are older or have disabilities to get COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, and is offering grants to help make that happen. The NCOA will award approximately 250 grants for six-, 12-, or 15-month projects to local organizations including senior centers and community centers. Applications accepted till March 15 or funds are depleted.
AARP’s Community Challenge provides small grants to fund quick-action projects that can help communities become more livable. This year in addition to the flagship grants the opportunities include capacity-building microgrants and support for demonstration projects. Priority goes to projects that lead to physical improvements in the community; temporary demonstrations that lead to long-term change; and new programming pilots or services. Deadline: March 15.
A new grant opportunity is based on the premise that “all families in the U.S. should be able to provide their children with nutritious foods” that support optimal development. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Healthy Eating Research program seeks solution-oriented proposals from investigators representing diverse disciplines and backgrounds, with a goal of understanding which strategies improve health outcomes for children. Deadline: April 5.
The Camden Coalition invites all to spread word of their work in the field of complex care at the November 1-3 Putting Care at the Center 2023 conference. Lead a workshop, or present a poster or table at the Beehive, the place for emerging knowledge, experience, and strategy. Application deadline for the workshop is March 13; for the Beehive, June 15.
