Friend --
This is a call to action by Detroit DSA!?Join us this Thursday the 23rd at 10 AM, as we demand that the Detroit City Council reject a proposal that will give the Ilitch family $800 million dollars to develop the District Detroit (a current collection of Ilitch owned surface lots around Little Caesars arena).
Billionaire Illitch family and Stephen Ross are trying to leverage their wealth over the city of Detroit for an obscene $800 million handout by way of tax breaks, direct cash infusion, and captured taxes from across the state of Michigan. This comes at a time when 19,000 Detroit properties are facing property tax foreclosures due to the property tax moratorium expiring in March.
We have seen the false promises of the Ilitches before. They received $400 million eight years ago to develop Little Caesars Arena and the District Detroit. They fooled our politicians with images of a flashy tree-lined walkable neighborhood. Eight years later and that same proposed development area remains a collection of surface lots.
On Thursday the 23rd at 10 AM, Detroit City Council will take up this proposal. The developers are counting on their power of capital overpowering our strength in numbers. We are calling on every person who is available, regardless of where you live to join us either in person or over Zoom, to voice their objections to this undemocratic heist, and to suggest that these public development funds go to preventing thousands of upcoming foreclosures, and bringing more educators, bus drivers, library workers, and essential services to the city of Detroit.
Register here! Let us know you can attend the Detroit City Council meeting on February 23rd at 10 AM! <[link removed]>
