This week, we publish InSight Crime's 2022 Homicide Round-Up ([link removed]) , where we provide an overview of last year’s murder statistics across the region. In this round-up, we include several smaller islands of the Caribbean, where tit-for-tat gang killings ([link removed]) have driven a sharp increase in violence. We also review the region’s traditional homicide hotspots, including Mexico ([link removed]) , Colombia ([link removed]) , and Brazil ([link removed]) , and cast an eye to El Salvador ([link removed]-) , where a harsh anti-gang clampdown has significantly reduced murders at the cost of allegedly
systematic human rights abuses.

In other news, we analyze El Salvador’s “Iron Fist” ([link removed]) [link removed] to address street gangs like the MS13. The state of emergency declared in March last year has become permanent, and while security has undeniably improved, experts are concerned that gangs could return if the underlying conditions that produce them are not addressed. Lastly, we analyze the impact of record cocaine seizures ([link removed]) made last year in Colombia and discuss whether increasing profits from the country’s drug trade could pose an obstacle to plans for peace ([link removed]) .

------------------------------------------------------------
After the influential and well-sourced publication El Faro declared that El Salvador’s controversial President Nayib Bukele had “disarticulate(d)” the country’s gangs, is it time to revisit the question: Does mano dura work?

Before reaching its finding, El Faro said it had spent 10 months visiting 14 communities, most of which it called “impenetrable” prior to March 2022. That was when, at the behest of the president, El Salvador’s Congress declared a state of emergency following some 92 homicides in a three-day spate of gang-led violence.
