Weekly InSight
This week, we publish InSight Crime's 2022 Homicide Round-Up, where we provide an overview of last year’s murder statistics across the region. In this round-up, we include several smaller islands of the Caribbean, where tit-for-tat gang killings have driven a sharp increase in violence. We also review the region’s traditional homicide hotspots, including Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil, and cast an eye to El Salvador, where a harsh anti-gang clampdown has significantly reduced murders at the cost of allegedly systematic human rights abuses.

In other news, we analyze El Salvador’s “Iron Fist” policy to address street gangs like the MS13. The state of emergency declared in March last year has become permanent, and while security has undeniably improved, experts are concerned that gangs could return if the underlying conditions that produce them are not addressed. Lastly, we analyze the impact of record cocaine seizures made last year in Colombia and discuss whether increasing profits from the country’s drug trade could pose an obstacle to plans for peace.

That was when, at the behest of the president, El Salvador’s Congress declared a state of emergency following some 92 homicides in a three-day spate of gang-led violence.
