Weekly Digest Archive See past issues.   President's Message February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of African Americans and their role in U.S. history. Currently, 10 percent of nurses in the United States identify as Black or African American, according to nurse.org. Mary Eliza Mahoney is remembered as the first Black nurse in history. She graduated from nursing school in 1869 and was the first African American nurse to be licensed. You can learn more about 14 famous Black nurses who have changed the profession. Also, in February, we recognize International Epilepsy Day on February 13. This day raises awareness about epilepsy and its impact worldwide. The observance is an opportunity to highlight the problems faced by students with epilepsy and their families. Learn more. The Seizure Action Plan Coalition, managed by the Epilepsy Alliance of America, is hosting an annual Seizure Action Plan Awareness Week starting February 13, 2023, coordinating with International Epilepsy Awareness Day. Here are a few highlights: Learning from the Past and Moving Forward: Implementing School Nursing Research Priorities Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory to Improve Children's Self-Care: An Integrative Review A Systematic Scoping Review of Psychological Capital Related to Mental Health in Youth Paid advertisement   New Program on School-Recommended Vaccinations NASN's new educational activity, Immunization 101: A primer on school-recommended vaccinations, provides school nurses with a primer or refresher on school-required child/adolescent vaccinations. Participants will be able to: Define herd immunity Understand the child/adolescent vaccination schedule Identify the required immunizations for students to attend school Verbalize the components of a legal immunization record Understand where to locate the state immunization registry and know how to access a student’s immunization record. Upon completion, participants will receive 1.0 NCPD contact hours, and there is no cost for NASN members. Learn more. School-Based Telehealth Can Enhance Student Health Outcomes Telehealth can expand and enhance access to school-based health care, but its use has been relatively limited. Previous studies have demonstrated that it can be an effective alternative strategy. However, almost all research has focused on a single telehealth service. The JOSN article, Overview of School-Based Telehealth Network Grant Program Services Delivered to Students in Rural Schools, adds to the research by elucidating that telehealth in schools can address multiple clinical conditions through individual services. School nurses play a critical role in identifying the symptoms, referral for further medical evaluation, and the health and academic impacts experienced by students. School nurses participating in NASN’s School-based Active Surveillance for Chronic Absenteeism (SBAS) are currently involved in identifying and referring children with symptoms of ME/CFS for further medical evaluation.
