This week the Federal Trade Commission reported that for the first time ever, cigarette unit sales by the largest US tobacco companies dropped below 200 billion – a 70% decrease from their high 40 years ago. While this is a step in the right direction, the absolute volume of cigarettes sold in the US in 2021 was still an appalling 190.2 billion, with billions more sold overseas. We should not let the industry use the decline as a data point in their campaign to say they are “unsmoking the world” especially as they continue to push new tobacco products.
