Today, new plans for a pandemic agreement were released. After the disastrously unequal response to Covid-19, which saw millions of people in the global south unable to access vaccines and treatments, a revolution in how we make and manage medicines is needed urgently.

During the pandemic, big pharma’s greed has combined with vaccine nationalism to form a toxic mix that caused hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths, as well as economic destitution and a huge mental health toll.

The pandemic preparedness agreement draft vindicates our analysis of what went wrong in the Covid-19 pandemic. The demands we've been making for years are now accepted as common sense.

The draft calls for waivers of intellectual property rights during a pandemic, a vital measure that would have saved countless lives had it been agreed as soon as Covid-19 was declared a pandemic.

It also demands that pharma corporations share their technology and know-how widely, so countries across the world are better prepared to deal with health crises.

And after the catastrophic decision to allow pharma companies to control and monopolise publicly funded vaccines, it is encouraging to see the call for public interest conditions to be attached to government funding.

Clearly, global solidarity is the only way forward.

** What we're calling for

These are important steps, but the reality is words won’t save lives: only actions will.

We need this agreement to have teeth. For far too long governments have allowed big pharma to play God when it comes to health.

We know the UK government consistently acts to protect big pharma’s interests and will face pressure from the industry’s lobbyists to water down these important demands. And we know also that the system was broken long before the pandemic, with big pharma ignoring diseases which won’t make them huge profits and charging sky-high prices for essential medicines.

That’s why we’re launching a new campaign, targeted at the UK government, demanding we learn from the lessons of the pandemic and start building a new pharmaceutical system.

We demand drugs, tests and treatments that are affordable to all, everywhere.
We demand an end to pharma patent monopolies.
We demand public control over public research.

The pandemic exposed everything that was wrong with big pharma. These profiteering companies don’t keep us safe and won’t keep us safe in future, so it’s time to wrestle power back and demand a new plan for pharma. We must make sure that profit will never again trump human lives.
