These are important steps, but the reality is words won’t save lives: only actions will.
We need this agreement to have teeth. For far too long governments have allowed big pharma to play God when it comes to health.
We know the UK government consistently acts to protect big pharma’s interests and will face pressure from the industry’s lobbyists to water down these important demands. And we know also that the system was broken long before the pandemic, with big pharma ignoring diseases which won’t make them huge profits and charging sky-high prices for essential medicines.
That’s why we’re launching a new campaign, targeted at the UK government, demanding we learn from the lessons of the pandemic and start building a new pharmaceutical system.
We demand drugs, tests and treatments that are affordable to all, everywhere.
We demand an end to pharma patent monopolies.
We demand public control over public research.
It’s time to build a new pharma system.
