Dear John,
Today, U.S. Congresswoman Betty McCollum reintroduced a bill in Congress to permanently protect the Boundary Waters! The Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act will remove the threat of sulfide-ore copper mining from the watershed of the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs National Park permanently, so all generations to come can enjoy these landscapes forever .
Last week, you likely heard that the U.S. Department of the Interior announced historic 20-year protections for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park from sulfide-ore copper mining.

Thanks to the decision, this embattled wilderness finally has a semblance of the protections it deserves, but the Boundary Waters is not just a 20-year Wilderness. Rep. McCollum’s bill reintroduced today will get the BWCA the permanent protections it deserves.

“Interior Secretary Deb Haaland’s decision last week to ban mining for 20 years on federal public lands next to the Boundary Waters was a historic and critical step towards protecting America’s canoe country. The Boundary Waters, however, is not a 20-year wilderness – its irreplaceable values compel permanent protection. Rep. McCollum’s reintroduction of the Boundary Waters permanent protection legislation is key to protecting America’s most visited Wilderness - forever ,” said Ingrid Lyons, Executive Director of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters.
Unfortunately, without permanent protections, powerful anti-Boundary Waters members of Congress still lurk and are waiting for their window of opportunity to crush what we’ve worked so hard to achieve. Recently, Rep. Stauber introduced a bill that weaponizes facts and science. His bills are anti-Wilderness and would shorten environmental reviews for critical mineral production within the U.S.
We must make the Boundary Waters a forever Wilderness by pushing for permanent protection of this beloved watery wilderness.
Take action here [[link removed]] and urge your Congress members to support the bill.
