Celebrate Elsa - Adopt her Pride!

Hi John,

Happy Birthday Elsa! Today is special for Born Free – Elsa the lioness was born 67 years ago, on this day. We feature Elsa in our logo, because she has a unique link to our charity.

In 1966, our Co-Founders, Dame Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers MBE, starred in the wildlife classic ‘Born Free’. The film told the tale of Elsa’s rescue and return to the wild in Meru National Park in Kenya, by conservationists Joy and George Adamson.

“The true story of Elsa’s journey to freedom inspires everything we do as a charity."

“We never forget the importance of the individual. Elsa lit a flame in our hearts. It must never go out.”

- Dame Virginia McKenna DBE

In Elsa’s memory, we urgently need your help. Meru remains our spiritual homeland and here we are fighting to protect Elsa’s descendants.

How does your adoption help lions?

Across Africa, as humans encroach on lion habitat and prey becomes hard to find, conflict with people can be deadly:

• Lions are entangled in lethal wire snares, set by poachers, and suffer lingering deaths from excruciating injuries

• Or, desperate for food, hungry lions can target livestock and are deliberately poisoned to prevent this – dying in agony

Your Elsa’s Pride adoption will help keep Elsa’s descendants safe from poachers and find humane solutions to ‘conflict’. You’ll support the vital conservation of this endangered species – down 90% to just 20,000 lions, since ‘Born Free’ was filmed 57 years ago.

Adopt today to join our global network of passionate people, fighting to secure a safe future for lions.
