Hi John, Happy Birthday Elsa! Today is special for Born Free – Elsa the lioness was born 67 years ago, on this day. We feature Elsa in our logo, because she has a unique link to our charity.
In 1966, our Co-Founders, Dame Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers MBE, starred in the wildlife classic ‘Born Free’. The film told the tale of Elsa’s rescue and return to the wild in Meru National Park in Kenya, by conservationists Joy and George Adamson.

How does your adoption help lions? |
Across Africa, as humans encroach on lion habitat and prey becomes hard to find, conflict with people can be deadly: |
• Lions are entangled in lethal wire snares, set by poachers, and suffer lingering deaths from excruciating injuries
• Or, desperate for food, hungry lions can target livestock and are deliberately poisoned to prevent this – dying in agony |
