Hello,

In this week's edition, I look at why you need to integrate your shadow — and your aggression. Masih Alinejad and I discuss the current situation in Iran, and I pull from the archives on "What's More Real Than Pain?"

** Integrating Your shadow
------------------------------------------------------------

No one can be a good person without integrating the capacity for aggression. That is because you cannot say "no" without the capacity for aggression. If you really say it, "no" means there is nothing you can do to me that will make me change my mind. Or conversely, it means I will play for higher stakes than you are willing to. Unless you have your aggression integrated, there is no chance you can say that, and if you did, no one would take you seriously because they would know it was just a show. Therefore, one of the most useful things you need to work on is this idea of the integration of your shadow.

What do you do with the part of you that is aggressive and potentially malevolent? You just crush it — that is the superego response in some sense — and you just put it behind you, so to speak. Or, do you admit to its existence and bring it into the game?

Disciplined aggression gives you access to the whole source of energy you would not otherwise have.

"If you are still an adolescent by the time you are 40, you would be the sort of person you do not even want to be around. There is something rotten about that. In the contemptible sense, it [adolescence] is something that has overstayed its welcome." (Share this on Twitter) ([link removed])

"The reason you need profound things is that life is actually a profound problem for everyone. You can shelter back and live a very conservative existence, but that does not stop you from having to face the ultimate questions of life." (Share this on Twitter) ([link removed])

"If you ask yourself, instead of telling yourself, ‘what is it that I could do to set things more right today?’ then you can go do it. And you put the world together a little more." (Share this on Twitter) ([link removed])

What's More Real Than Pain? | Jordan B Peterson

Dr. Peterson:
"The reality of pain is undeniable. And it's not amenable to rational argumentation. It announces its existence. For a long time, I thought in some real sense that there were no more fundamental realities than pain. And there is an ethical dimension to that too. Because if you accept the reality of pain, there seems to come with it the impetus to eliminate unnecessary pain."
