This is big. Just a few days ago, the FDA updated requirements that will expand access to medication abortion, also known as abortion pills. Certified pharmacies will now be able to stock the pills, and people with prescriptions will be able to get the medication from pharmacies.
While we celebrate this pragmatic, compassionate, and science-based decision, this change alone will not protect abortion access for everyone. First, medication abortion is not right for everyone -- and other options are still needed, especially for patients seeking abortion beyond the limits of medication abortion.
And this decision will not overrule existing state abortion bans and restrictions. Patients who live in a state with a total ban on abortion, or other bans and restrictions on medication abortion will not be able to fill prescriptions at local pharmacies.
