The new FDA decision is a big deal. Here's what it means:

PLANNED PARENTHOOD
This is big. Just a few days ago, the FDA updated requirements that will expand access to medication abortion, also known as abortion pills. Certified pharmacies will now be able to stock the pills, and people with prescriptions will be able to get the medication from pharmacies.

State laws may still restrict medication abortion where you live — visit abortionfinder.org for a guide on where abortion is available.

The new FDA policy is a huge step toward expanding access to abortion. It will give people seeking abortion a safe and accessible way to get the care they need.

The details are important, so here’s what you need to know. This FDA decision will:
  • protect patient health. Medication abortion is an effective and extremely safe option for just about anyone who wants to end an early pregnancy. It has a safety record of more than 99%.
  • protect patient privacy. Because medication can be taken at home or another private location, people can get the care they need in a place they feel most comfortable — while still receiving necessary information and support.
  • expand access to care. Traveling to a health center that provides abortion can be difficult or impossible for many people, especially those who live in rural or remote areas. In many cases, these patients will be able to get a prescription via telemedicine, and receive their medication either through the mail or at a local pharmacy.

While we celebrate this pragmatic, compassionate, and science-based decision, this change alone will not protect abortion access for everyone. First, medication abortion is not right for everyone — and other options are still needed, especially for patients seeking abortion beyond the limits of medication abortion.

And this decision will not overrule existing state abortion bans and restrictions. Patients who live in a state with a total ban on abortion, or other bans and restrictions on medication abortion will not be able to fill prescriptions at local pharmacies.

This FDA decision shows once again that we have the power to protect and expand access to reproductive health care, including abortion. But we still have so much work to do. We will continue to count on you and Planned Parenthood supporters across the country to help stop and reverse abortion bans, until everyone has access to the care they need.

Thank you for staying informed and staying active.
