You may have seen my recent web-exclusive article, “Truth’s Many Triumphs ([link removed]) ,” in which I provided a brief report on the performance of the 2022 FIRST THINGS Year-End Campaign.

In it, I highlight the paradoxes of life in 2023. In an age of chiaroscuro, the darks are dark, but in God’s blessed providence the darkness only serves to throw the light—our reasons for hope—into sharper relief.

Amidst the darkness, you, our readers, stand shining as a light. Through your thoughtfulness, curiosity, and generosity, you point us and each other toward the enduring light of truth.

Without further ado, the campaign tally: $1,092,443 from 1,526 readers, which comfortably exceeds our goal of $800,000 from 1,200 supporters.

On behalf of our editors and staff, I want to thank you for providing this critical financial support for our 2023 magazine and core educational programs.

Moreover, we draw great encouragement from what this outpouring of support represents, namely, a renewed vote of confidence in both the enduring vitality of and urgent need for the mission and voice of FIRST THINGS.

We recognize that attendant to this vote of confidence is a responsibility. To this responsibility I will append a promise: FIRST THINGS will remain a strong, undaunted voice for religion in the public square, even as we grow in reach and influence.
