Last week, in a first-grade classroom In Newport News, Virginia, a six year old boy pulled out a gun and shot his teacher in the chest. While she sustained life-threatening injuries, Abby Zwerner thankfully survived and is recovering in the hospital.
John – I shouldn’t have to say this, but we live in a country that forces me to: A child should not have access to a firearm.

I wish I could say this shooting was unprecedented, but the truth is, it’s not out of the ordinary for our country. 76% of school shootings are facilitated by kids' access to guns at home and each day, eight kids are unintentionally injured or killed with an improperly stored firearm – this is called family fire. In fact, just yesterday, a twelve-year-old was shot and killed when a gun went off inside a home in Tampa, FL.
Right now, in the United States, 4.6 million kids live in a home with unsecured firearms and this puts us all at risk. But there are ways that we can take action to prevent family fire – and we cannot wait until the next tragedy to do so:
The Prevent Family Fire Act is bipartisan legislation that incentivizes the sale of safe firearm storage devices on a national level, to prevent suicide, gun theft, and unintentional shootings. Can you add your name to our petition right now and urge your representative to support this bipartisan legislation [[link removed]] ?

Thank you for taking action to protect our children – and all of us.
