John,
Last week, in a first-grade classroom In Newport News, Virginia, a 6-six-year old boy pulled out a gun and shot his teacher in the chest. While she sustained life-threatening injuries, Abby Zwerner thankfully survived and is recovering in the hospital.
John – I shouldn’t have to say this, but we live in a country that forces me to: A child should not have access to a firearm.

I wish I could say this shooting was unprecedented, but the truth is, it’s not out of the ordinary for our country. Each day, eight kids are unintentionally injured or killed with an improperly stored firearm – this is called family fire. In fact, just yesterday, a twelve-year-old was shot and killed when a gun went off inside a home in Tampa, FL.
Right now, in the United States, 4.6 million kids live in a home with unsecured firearms and this puts us all at risk. But there are ways that we can take action to prevent family fire – and we cannot wait until the next tragedy to do so:
