Bold ideas were the theme of the December 1 summit Building Equity in Nursing and Health Care Leadership, and a Campaign blog details how nurses and leaders in education, government, business, and health plan on creating change. The impressive list of names of speakers was topped only by their powerful advice on ways nurses can work with others to address disparities in health and health care. Recordings of the presentations are now posted online.

ANA Welcomes New President
The American Nurses Association starts the new year with a new president, Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, MBA, RN. Among leadership roles Mensik Kennedy has held during her decade of ANA service is treasurer and chair of the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committee. Under her, she says, ANA will continue to address major issues including nurse well-being, racism in the field, and full-practice authority.

Nonmedical Factors: Are They Really &ldquo;Determinants&rdquo;?
Words matter, writes AnnMarie Walton, PhD, MPH, RN, a 2014 Campaign Breakthrough Leader in Nursing and Campaign Outreach Advocate for a Culture of Health, who probes the impact and meaning of the phrase &ldquo;social determinants of health.&rdquo; In an American Journal of Nursing essay, Walton tells how she came to believe that words lacked &ldquo;the sense that these constructs could be modified by individual and community resilience.&rdquo; Walton urges a thoughtful rephrasing that might better serve all.
