Bold ideas were the theme of the December 1 summit Building Equity in Nursing and Health Care Leadership, and a Campaign blog details how nurses and leaders in education, government, business, and health plan on creating change. The impressive list of names of speakers was topped only by their powerful advice on ways nurses can work with others to address disparities in health and health care. Recordings of the presentations are now posted online.

The American Nurses Association starts the new year with a new president, Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, MBA, RN. Among leadership roles Mensik Kennedy has held during her decade of ANA service is treasurer and chair of the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committee. Under her, she says, ANA will continue to address major issues including nurse well-being, racism in the field, and full-practice authority.
Words matter, writes AnnMarie Walton, PhD, MPH, RN, a 2014 Campaign Breakthrough Leader in Nursing and Campaign Outreach Advocate for a Culture of Health, who probes the impact and meaning of the phrase “social determinants of health.” In an American Journal of Nursing essay, Walton tells how she came to believe that words lacked “the sense that these constructs could be modified by individual and community resilience.” Walton urges a thoughtful rephrasing that might better serve all.
With new relationships with Diligent and Equilar, the Nurses on Boards Coalition is providing new ways for nurses who have served on boards to be raise their profiles as potential board members for private and public corporations. While those two distinctive databases open the door to corporate spots, NOBC as ever encourages nurses to apply for positions on nonprofit, educational, foundation, and civic organizations.
In a special issue, Nursing Outlook expands on the health equity goals outlined in the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report. “Nurses Achieving Health Equity: Aligning the Field for Impact” articles touch on leadership, education, the value of coalitions, finding resources from foundations, and more. Many of the authors have also helped shape the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action.

Editors welcome submissions of abstracts that reflect original research, analyses, and commentaries about how best to better prepare for pandemic responses. Deadline: January 16.
The National Black Nurses Association seeks an experienced leader to partner with the organization’s leaders and members as its new executive director. Through more than 100 chapters, the NBNA serves as the professional voice for over 200,000 African American nurses, nursing students, and retired nurses from the U.S., Eastern Caribbean, and Africa.
