Liz Willen Dear reader,

Digging right back in post holidays isnā€™t always easy, but we returned with newfound energy and gratitude, thanks to our loyal and supportive readers who helped us reach and even surpass a $50,000 match challenge offered by a generous individual. We are so grateful to all of you whose support acknowledges our important work and helps sustain it.

We also are jumping right back into covering the vast inequities that permeate U.S. education and the lingering impact of the pandemic on student performance, with a close up look at middle school math and how two schools ([link removed]) are fighting the freefall. In case you missed them over the holidays, we also published new stories on reading as a new civil rights issue, ([link removed]) looked at how Denmark ([link removed]) encourages assimilation of new immigrants in schools and peeked more closely at how climate change ([link removed]) is ā€“ and isnā€™t ā€“ being taught, among other topics. And today I weigh in on the sentencing of William "Rick" Singer
([link removed]) , the mastermind beyond the Varsity Blues college admissions scheme.

You may have missed a range of provocative opinion ([link removed]) pieces as well, so please take a close look and, as always, let us know what you think and remind others to sign up ([link removed]) for our newsletters. A Happy New Year to all.
