From Ben Jealous:
Growing up, my grandma used to tell me, “Never forget our people were always free.” I was confused — all but one of her grandparents were born to slavery.
Until one day it hit me; this phrase was likely an echo of an act of insurrection by one of her earliest ancestors in America. Slavery was a system that could only be maintained if people ultimately consented to being treated like farm animals: bred, beaten, and broken. Any child who understood freedom was their people’s history would undoubtedly conclude that it must also be their people’s destiny.
Her message–and the solving of that multigenerational mystery– is at the heart of my new book, releasing January 10th. Click the link below to pre-order your copy!

Never Forget Our People Were Always Free illuminates for each of us how the path to healing America’s broken heart starts with each of us having the courage to heal our own. The son of parents who had to leave Maryland in 1966 because their interracial marriage was illegal, Ben Jealous’ lively, courageous and empathetic storytelling shows every American how to heal deeply-cut divisions and recognize we are all in the same boat now.
We hope you consider ordering Ben’s book today.
