From Ben Jealous: Growing up, my grandma used to tell me, “Never forget our people were always free.” I was confused — all but one of her grandparents were born to slavery.
Until one day it hit me; this phrase was likely an echo of an act of insurrection by one of her earliest ancestors in America. Slavery was a system that could only be maintained if people ultimately consented to being treated like farm animals: bred, beaten, and broken. Any child who understood freedom was their people’s history would undoubtedly conclude that it must also be their people’s destiny.
