Dear Friend of MCV,

The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99% of the world’s oceans [[link removed]] . However, with some of the strongest gusts in the world, the Gulf is also uniquely positioned to fight climate change and reduce our dependence on costly foreign oil and natural gas by harnessing clean, renewable offshore wind energy.

Maine Conservation Voters supports responsibly sited offshore wind power and is working to minimize negative impacts and ensure that benefits are fairly distributed. In December, the State of Maine released a draft of its Offshore Wind Roadmap [[link removed]] , a plan to responsibly develop floating offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine and make progress towards the state’s goal of 100% clean energy by 2050 [[link removed].] . This plan is part of a thoughtful process, setting the stage for an industry that aims to coexist with other ocean users and marine life.

The State of Maine is taking public comments on the draft plan until Thursday, January 5. You can review the draft Roadmap here [[link removed]] , and submit your comments through this form [[link removed]] on the Maine Offshore Wind Initiative website.

Maine Conservation Voters and other allied Maine organizations will be submitting positive comments and constructive feedback. Here at MCV, we are particularly excited about the plan’s commitment to environmental monitoring and mitigation, consistent collaboration with the fishing industry, and the creation of a floating offshore wind innovation hub to take advantage of technological developments in the industry. The University of Maine’s offshore wind program is contributing key research, keeping Maine at the forefront of the field.

You can learn more about the Maine Offshore Wind Roadmap by watching this Lunch & Learn [[link removed]] hosted by MCV in 2022.

We are energized by the progress the state is making towards responsibly developed renewable energy. We are also hopeful that the growth of offshore wind will show care towards other Maine ocean users, communities across the state, and wildlife onshore and offshore.

Thank you for taking action and stay tuned for further developments throughout this year!
