Dear John,
It is brutally tough being a wild lion – even at Christmas, the season of goodwill.
The reality is that, at every turn, wild lions are confronted by many humans who wish to do them harm. Outside the relative safety of National Parks, they face challenges that risk their very survival.
• Their habitat is carved up – dissected by roads, converted for housing, farms and ranches
• Their natural prey is depleted by poaching or replaced by livestock
• When, in desperation, they turn to killing cattle, sheep or goats, they are persecuted and poisoned
• And then, to crown it all, in a number of countries they are pursued by a small number of wealthy people who want nothing more than to kill the biggest and the best lion for ‘fun’ so their last remains - a head or a skin - can be hung on a wall as a trophy

But, it doesn’t have to be this way.
In Kenya, where Born Free has been working to protect lions for more than ten years, numbers are steadily increasing, including five cubs born wild and free in Meru where our team monitors and protects them, alongside our colleagues at the Kenya Wildlife Service and our friends in the local communities.
What would happen to lion numbers in other countries if the same community-based compassionate conservation approach were adopted there?
What would happen if current trophy hunting practices - which deliver so little for lion conservation and community development - were replaced by better alternatives?
