Magnificent lions: Harassed, persecuted, poisoned, shot, stuffed, hung on a wall |

Dear John,
It is brutally tough being a wild lion – even at Christmas, the season of goodwill.
The reality is that, at every turn, wild lions are confronted by many humans who wish to do them harm. Outside the relative safety of National Parks, they face challenges that risk their very survival. |
• Their habitat is carved up – dissected by roads, converted for housing, farms and ranches • Their natural prey is depleted by poaching or replaced by livestock • When, in desperation, they turn to killing cattle, sheep or goats, they are persecuted and poisoned • And then, to crown it all, in a number of countries they are pursued by a small number of wealthy people who want nothing more than to kill the biggest and the best lion for ‘fun’ so their last remains - a head or a skin - can be hung on a wall as a trophy |

But, it doesn’t have to be this way.
In Kenya, where Born Free has been working to protect lions for more than ten years, numbers are steadily increasing, including five cubs born wild and free in Meru where our team monitors and protects them, alongside our colleagues at the Kenya Wildlife Service and our friends in the local communities.
What would happen to lion numbers in other countries if the same community-based compassionate conservation approach were adopted there? |

What would happen if current trophy hunting practices - which deliver so little for lion conservation and community development - were replaced by better alternatives?
As a Born Free supporter, we know you share our disgust at the lack of compassion and respect shown to lions and other wild animals across the world.
Why not make a difference by donating to our Saving Lions Together appeal today. Any gift you can give will genuinely help turn the tide. |
Your gift will:
- Help care for our 27 rescued lions
- Fund the safe removal of snares before more lions suffer
- Support the rescue of trapped lions, giving them a greater chance of survival
- Fight to end cruel trophy hunting

“We named 2022 our Year of the Lion, in memory of my late father Bill, a lion of a man. What would he have thought of the hundreds of grotesque hunting photos posted online by shameless trophy hunters?” said our Executive President Will Travers OBE.
“I know he would have been outraged but, with just 20,000 wild lions clinging to survival, I also know he would have pledged to do everything in his power to make things better and end the conservation crisis.”
Your gift today could help save this iconic species and fight to end the cruelty, the suffering, and the persecution and the exploitation. There is no time to delay. Please help by taking action now.
With our thanks,
Your friends at Born Free |
