I know you're busy, John, but I need to bump Liz's message.

Liz and I have a lot in common, but it’s because we’re in a club that no one wants to be a part of: Both our mothers were murdered in senseless acts of gun violence. So this work is personal to us and we lead at Brady because we know how vital this work is.

Like Liz, I struggle with holidays too. These next few days will be especially painful — a pain I can't fathom allowing anyone else to feel, knowing we can prevent tragedies like these. That's why I'm humbly asking for your help now.

This is a time for keeping loved ones close and we’re doing the life-saving work to ensure gun violence won’t tear families apart. So please: Can we count on you to step up and donate right now to help Brady keep fighting to end gun violence for good?

Subject: I know I'm not alone

Hi John,

I'm Liz Dunning, vice president of development here at Brady and I'm a gun violence survivor. I lost my mother when she was shot and killed in the doorway of our home 19 years ago. In just a second, I'm going to ask you to make a gift to Brady to help us end gun violence and honor those who can't celebrate this holiday season with us. But first, I want to tell you why I'm in this fight — and why your support is essential to powering us forward.

Mom was murdered on Dec. 5, 2003. Almost 20 years later, the holidays are still hard for me and my family.

If she was still here, I know we would have built even more special traditions together, with my husband and kids now part of them. And I know that we would have spent the holidays laughing.

This year, far too many families have been changed forever after devastating shootings and these weeks will be hard for those in communities that are still reeling, like those in Colorado Springs and Uvalde. It breaks my heart knowing there are so many other families experiencing so much grief during what should be a joyous time. That's why I work with Brady — and why I'm asking for your support today.

Brady is led by gun violence survivors like me, and we need you in this fight to make sure that no other family ever suffers this pain and loss. Because for the first time in a long time, we have a real opportunity to make the life-saving change we need. So please, this holiday season, will you make a gift to Brady in honor of all the families who can't celebrate with their loved ones — and help us prevent any more families from having to leave an empty chair or stocking next year?

My mom was my best friend, and going through another holiday season without her hurts so much. But it's why I know I have to keep going, and why I can promise you that your support today will make a huge difference: because I cannot fathom allowing someone else to feel the loss and pain I do, knowing we can make real change.

Thank you for your support.
