This was a year of hope and tragedy, of struggle and celebration. Like
every year since 1949, the programs of the Aspen Institute were hard at
work to improve not just the future but the here and now. We rose to
[2]face injustice, [3]environmental catastrophe, and a [4]crisis of trust.
We [5]supported colleagues embroiled in a military invasion, fought for
[6]worker rights, and [7]battled misinformation. We helped lift up
[8]marginalized communities and were lifted up by the [9]heroes we
encountered along the way.

Creating a free, just, and equitable society is our ongoing mission. We are
proud to have had you as a partner in 2022 and hope you’ll [10]continue to
be a part of our work in the next year and beyond.

[13]Lessons and Insights From the War in Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused reverberating effects around the
world. Alliances have shifted, borders have opened, and there are ongoing
food and energy crises. Meanwhile, our international partner [14]Aspen Kyiv
is continuing its work to promote a free and democratic society, while
several Institute programs [15]remain dedicated to addressing the war and
its fallout. Read insights from Institute experts and guest speakers,
including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and learn how you can
[16]support Aspen Kyiv’s efforts.

[19]How to Build and Sustain Worker Cooperatives

At a time of economic inequality, wage stagnation, and job uncertainty,
employees have established a growing number of worker cooperatives in the
US. In these cooperatives, workers jointly own and manage the business.
They are more resilient to economic shocks, experience lower turnover, and
have higher productivity levels than traditional business models. Read more
about how cooperatives [20]shift power into the hands of workers in this
piece by Merrit Stüven of the [21]Economic Opportunities Program.

[24]Books for Your Winter Reading List

Last week, [25]Aspen Words announced the [26]longlist for its annual
literary prize. The award is given to a work of fiction that expands
perspectives around contemporary issues such as gentrification, xenophobia,
and climate change. The 14 books include seven debuts and five short story
collections and [27]feature a range of dynamic voices. Each would make a
perfect holiday gift (or you could always treat yourself)!
