State of the State Address
Looking Back on 2018
Good afternoon!
Governor Holcomb’s fourth State of the State Address is right around the corner (this Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET)! In the days leading up to it, we’re taking a look at Eric’s previous State of the State speeches to see how he’s delivered on the bold vision he’s laid out. Here are some examples of Governor Holcomb Putting People First in his 2018 State of the State Address.
Governor Holcomb’s 2018 State of the State Address: January 9, 2018
Goal: “(In 2017) we beat the 2012 record and secured nearly 300 business commitments that will lead to the creation of over 30,000 new jobs… so I’ve challenged the good people at the Indiana Economic Development Corporation to do it again in 2018!”
* Result: Second consecutive record breaking year for economic development ([link removed][UNIQID])
Goal: “We must ensure that every Hoosier student receives an education infused with STEM subjects, critical thinking skills and the intellectual curiosity that prepares them for lifelong learning.”
* Result: Indiana brings computer science to every school. ([link removed][UNIQID])
Goal: “Strengthening our workforce will be one of the most important things we’ve ever undertaken. It’s going to take a long-term commitment and an all-in approach among many stakeholders in every community.”
* Result: Created Governor’s Workforce Cabinet ([link removed][UNIQID]) to bring together experts from public, private, non-profit and education sectors to study and realign workforce development efforts throughout Indiana. Also increased funding ([link removed][UNIQID]) for Next Level Jobs training programs.
Goal: “We’re clarifying the sales tax exempt status on software as a service.”
* Result: Software as a Service exempted from state sales tax ([link removed][UNIQID]) to attract more tech firms."
Goal: “We’re moving forward to require Indiana physicians to use INSPECT before ever issuing the first prescription.”
* Result: Bill to require INSPECT ([link removed][UNIQID]) system check signed by governor, which is critical to helping physicians combat the drug epidemic.
Goal: “We’ll seek to increase the number of opioid treatment locations from 18 to 27.”
* Result: Law signed to add 9 new opioid treatment ([link removed][UNIQID]) centers, helping more Hoosiers on the road to recovery.
Goal: “Tonight I’m setting a goal to become the best state in the Midwest for infant mortality rates by 2024.”
* Result: Holcomb signs bill to reduce infant mortality ([link removed][UNIQID]) , standardize care.
Goal: “I met with students from Cumberland Elementary School… who have spearheaded the push for several years to adopt the Say’s Firefly as our official state insect… This is a great way for young students to be involved in the civic process…and I’m taking up their cause this year…”
* Result: The Say’s Firefly is Indiana’s state insect. ([link removed][UNIQID])
