Dear John,

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the Kremlin has been cracking down on artistic expression within its own borders. Over the past year, authorities have raided concerts in Moscow, fined musicians over antiwar expressions, placed dissenting filmmakers and writers on wanted lists, and proposed book bans equating queerness in literature with pornography. Still, Russian art and culture persists—flickering against the darkness of civic repression.

Freedom House Calls on China to Stop Violent Arrests of Protesters
The Chinese government should stop detaining peaceful protesters and stop harassing those who defend protesters’ rights. Additionally, they should immediately halt, investigate, and prosecute any use of violence or extrajudicial measures by authorities against those who exercise fundamental freedoms and rights.
