Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the Kremlin has been cracking down on artistic expression within its own borders.
Over the past year, authorities have raided concerts in Moscow, fined musicians over antiwar expressions, placed dissenting filmmakers and writers on wanted lists, and proposed book bans equating queerness in literature with pornography.
Still, Russian art and culture persists—flickering against the darkness of civic repression.

2023 Mark Palmer Prize Nominations
